Baby Development in Months 5 – 7
Is your baby suddenly shy around strangers, wants to be held all the time, or starts rolling around the house? Many parents experience a period of significant changes between the 5th and 7th month and wonder if their baby is developing appropriately for their age.
The most important reassurance first: At this age, many babies make noticeable developmental leaps. They recognize familiar people better, begin to actively explore their environment, and react more sensitively to new situations. Some become more clingy, while others excitedly discover their newfound mobility – often both happen simultaneously.
What You Can Observe Now
You might notice that your baby:
- distinguishes between familiar and unfamiliar people
- initially reacts cautiously to strangers (stranger anxiety)
- looks for you when you leave the room
- rolls from back to tummy or vice versa
- reaches for toys purposefully and examines them
- vocalizes more often, laughs, or seeks contact with you
Many babies now show much more personality and want to actively engage with their surroundings.
What Your Baby Needs Now
With growing curiosity comes a greater need for security.
What helps now:
- lots of closeness and a reliable caregiver
- consistent daily routines
- time to get to know new situations calmly
- a safe environment for free movement
- shared play with eye contact, speech, and laughter
Stranger anxiety doesn’t mean your baby is “fearful.” It shows that they can now reliably recognize familiar people and have formed attachments.
Nutrition and Health
Between the 5th and 7th month, many babies start with solid foods. The right time is individual.
Typical signs of readiness for solids include:
- stable head control
- interest in food
- purposeful reaching and bringing food to the mouth
- the tongue-thrust reflex gradually disappearing
Even after starting solids, breast milk or infant formula remains the primary source of nutrition. Small amounts of water can be offered with meals once solids are introduced.
How You Can Support Your Baby
Your baby learns primarily through their own experimentation now.
Helpful are:
- plenty of time on a safe play mat
- various safe objects to grasp and explore
- lots of talking, laughing, and singing together
- patience with stranger anxiety and new situations
- loving guidance rather than constant assistance with every movement
You don’t need to teach your baby new skills. What’s more important is a safe environment where they can be active on their own.
Milestones
- increasingly distinguishes between familiar and unfamiliar people
- frequently rolls from back to tummy and sometimes back again
- purposefully reaches for objects and explores them with hands and mouth
- supports themselves securely on arms or hands, preparing for crawling or creeping
- actively seeks eye contact and responds more consciously to facial expressions, language, and emotions
In Summary
Between the 5th and 7th month, your baby makes significant developmental strides. They strengthen their bond with familiar people, explore their surroundings more actively, and become increasingly mobile. A greater need for closeness, stranger anxiety, and first attempts at moving independently are common during this phase.
